Tatreez is a traditional Palestinian form of counted needlework that uses crossed stitches and repeating motifs to tell a story and communicate an idea. From the lush flora and fauna of Palestine to the striking architecture and religious fashion, tatreez is a way for Palestinian women to document and preserve their heritage.

Tatreez is stitched without a frame or hoop, using the sewing method rather than the stab-stitch method, which gives it a unique nubbly texture. It serves to document history and preserve culture through craft by passing it down from mother to daughter and through generations. “A decorative cloth for some, a sign of resistance for others”, and its modernized form is being taken up by non-Palestinians as a way of showing solidarity with the Palestinian struggle. (Fun fact: one of our husbands is Palestinian.)

Inaash is a Lebanese organization that empowers Palestinian women by providing them with livelihood opportunities. They have trained and empowered over 2000 women in refugee camps across Lebanon, providing work for over 400 women as of today. The designs are updated through collaborations with local and international artists and designers, drawing on Inaash's archive of traditional samples and adapting centuries-old stitches and patterns to modern aesthetic.
